Massage for chronic migraine relief

migraines, headaches, post concussion syndrome (PCS), Traumatic Brain INjury (TBI)

Massage for migraine and tension headaches will vary based on you and your symptoms. However, our primary goal will almost always be relaxation and nervous system down regulation. Your system is working in overdrive and we want to bring you back to a more settled place so you can rest, sleep, and work on breaking the migraine cycle.

While working to relax, a major factor are tense, tight muscles, so reducing muscle tension throughout the body is also an important aspect. We'll be working specifically around your face, scalp, neck and shoulders, but anywhere that feels connected. Finding and addressing those areas, can provide significant relief.

Why is massage a great tool for migraine prevention?
Two of the most frequently cited benefits of all massage styles are reduced stress and improved sleep, which are two of the most common triggers for headaches and migraines - I include PCS and TBI sufferers here since the most common symptom of both are usually reported as frequent headaches.

Tools of Treatment:
Beyond the most common benefits of massage there are multiple modalities that have specific benefits including:

● MLD (manual lymph drainage) - improve lymph movement and overall circulation that when built up can exacerbate someone who is already prone to migraines.
● Facial, TMJ & intraoral massage - helps reduce pain and release tension around the jaw, face, and sinus that are often overlooked as contributing factors to migraines and headaches.
● Trigger point therapy - helps release specific knot like points in tight muscle that when pressed either feel like the pain radiates out, or you might feel pain in a completely different place. When released they can reduces overall tension and help reduce migraines.
Deep tissue massage - helps release tight and stuck muscles around the neck and head. Reducing that tension can help reduce pain, and improve circulation.

Migraine Toolbox

If migraines have become a part of your life, consider starting a toolbox. Track what your triggers are and what tools you can use. For instance when I originally wrote this for a client, I was going to a hockey game. Loud noises, bright lights and fast moving objects are triggers for me so this is what I brought and will sometimes have with me at all times if I'm experiencing frequent migraines.

Here are my out of the house tools:
● Earplugs
● Noise canceling ear muffs for target practice - sometimes I wear these on top of earplugs
● Sunglasses
● Rescue or acute migraine medicine

At home tools - maintenance and self care:
● Migraine Buddy - It's a free app that helps you track your migraine frequency, triggers and effective treatments
● Gua Sha is a great tool for migraine self care and these are great videos to get you started. Remember it should be a very light touch, we're looking to relax.
