MASSAGE TREATMENT FOR TMJ (JAW), FACE, SCALP IN EVERETT, WA
TMJ & Intraoral Treatment Massage
When can jaw (TMJ), face, and scalp treatment massage help?
TMJ = TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT OR YOUR JAW JOINT
Your entire body is covered in muscles, including your face. Like all muscles these muscles can accumulate tension and discomfort due to overuse, injury, and the stressors of everyday life.
When we struggle with pain, it’s rarely one thing in isolation. If you feel pain around your face or jaw often from injury, stress, clenching, dental work, etc. those are pretty clear reasons to receive facial/jaw and intraoral massage.
Other reasons to receive massage around the face, jaw, intraoral and scalp may be more surprising, and can include:
● Headaches and migraines of all kinds
● People managing post concussion syndrome or traumatic brain injury
● Facial swelling/pain
● Teeth grinding
● Sinus/allergy pain or discomfort
● Dental work pain
● Neck pain, especially pain at the upper neck and base of the skull
● Pain at the front of the neck going down to the clavicle and chest
● Ear congestion or pain that isn’t related to an active infection
● Vertigo
● Tinnitus

What is intraoral massage (sometimes called buccal massage)?
Intraoral massage is done inside your mouth to gently work with and address the muscles on the inside of your mouth and jaw. Did you know there are muscles inside your mouth we can't reach directly from the outside? Or that each of your teeth are joined to their socket in the jaw by it's own joint and ligament? The idea of intraoral massage can feel overwhelming and obtrusive, but the work is done slowly and gently. Even if it could be beneficial for you, if you can't relax it may not be for you, or it may just be the wrong time and that's okay!
Why include intraoral massage?
If you aren't comfortable receiving intraoral massage yet, or you think you may never. That's okay! There’s still a lot of work we can do from the outside of the jaw.
If you are interested, addressing the intraoral muscles takes neck, facial and TMJ work to another level with the ability to address muscles on both sides, and accessing muscles and structures that aren’t available to us doing external work alone.
How is intraoral massage performed?
Before we begin we'll discuss how to communicate if you need to change or stop the work being done ahead of time, so we are never doing anything painful, uncomfortable or unmanageable for any reason.
I would rarely work exclusively on the inside of your mouth. We would begin with shoulders, neck, chest, face, scalp, and jaw massage and possibly MLD (manual lymphatic drainage), before moving to intraoral massage. In preparation to begin you'll be lying face up on the massage table, we'll get you comfortable, cozy and fully covered to the upper chest. For the intraoral portion I will be wearing gloves.
